Event Info

East Pennine Orienteering club welcomes all to Langfield Common for a weekend of orienteering on the 5th and 6 September 2026. Langfield Common offers classic south Pennine terrain, with intricate gritstone features, deep cloughs and open moorland providing a challenging navigational challenge.

Assembly

Assembly will be based in a sheltered barn and will include:

Download - Make sure you download once you have finished your course, even if you retire.

Toilets - There will be toilets based in assembly, but there will be no toilets between assembly and the start. So go before you leave to the start. There will be a disabled accessible toilet and urinals as well.

Catering - EPOC welcomes Podium catering across the weekend to provide food. The YHOA Junior Squad will be selling cakes to raise funds.

Traders - EPOC welcomes CompassPoint across the weekend with equipment and clothing for all your needs.

Start - The start is 1km from assembly with 130m climb. This is on path and partly through terrain. Please allow 15-20 minutes.

Finish - the finish is roughly 500m from assembly.

Travel

The event arena and parking are located near Mankinholes, Todmorden, Calderdale.

By Car

Once you have left the M62:

Follow signs towards Todmorden.

Continue into Todmorden town centre.

From the town centre, follow local signs for Mankinholes via Lee Bottom Road.

Continue up the hill until you reach Mankinholes.

Please note that the final approach is on narrow, steep roads with passing places. Drive with care and allow extra time for your journey.

Course Information

Terrain

Langfield Common is a high, exposed South Pennine plateau characterised by rugged gritstone outcrops, blanket bog and extensive peaty moorland surrounding the prominent Stoodley Pike Monument. The area features steep rocky escarpments, deep spring-fed troughs and intricate contour detail. Underfoot conditions are highly variable and are likely to include areas of deep, wet bog, particularly following periods of rain. Competitors should be prepared for rough terrain, challenging footing and rapidly changing weather conditions.

Punching System

SPORTident (SI) electronic punching will be used. Competitors should bring their own SI card. SI card hire will be available when entering through RaceSignUp.

Safety

Langfield Common is an exposed upland area where weather conditions can change rapidly. Competitors should dress appropriately for the forecast conditions and carry any mandatory kit specified in the Final Details.

All competitors must report to Download, even if they retire from their course. Failure to report may result in a search being initiated.

Please take care when crossing or running along roads and give way to all traffic. In the event of severe weather, courses or start procedures may be amended.

First Aid

First aid cover will be available in the Assembly area throughout the event. Mountain Rescue will be in attendance for emergencies.

Catering

EPOC welcomes Podium Catering across the weekend. Both cash and card payments will be accepted.

Prize Giving

Prize giving will take place at the Assembly area following the completion of racing. Awards will be presented for all championship classes.

Important Information

Safety and Risk: A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event.

Insurance: From 1st January 2026, participants who are not members of British Orienteering will no longer be covered by British Orienteering’s public liability insurance. By entering any event from 1st January 2026, you acknowledge that you are taking part at your own risk. For example, if you were to accidentally injure a member of the public or damage property during the event, you would not be covered. British Orienteering’s public liability insurance used to cover non-members at events before this date.
