I've Controlled events for EPOC at Storthes Hall a number of times over the years. This must be the first time that Alistair Tinto didn't play a major role and it just didn't seem quite right. Hopefully he will have enjoyed watching over us 'from above'. EPOC members were out in force on the day to fill the gaping gap that he has left.
My job was pretty easy, partly because I know the area so well, and partly because of the excellent new Peel Land Surveys map (made for the JK in 2016). Davey was busy with other planning commitments so I only got draft courses just before Christmas. This didn't turn out to be a problem as only very minor tweaks proved necessary. The finished courses provided winning times close to recommended and I heard no adverse comments so assume everyone was happy.
The biggest issue on the day was the lack of sufficient maps to meet demand for entries on the day. This was despite my suggestion to err on the large size when estimating numbers. It seems that there is an increasing reluctance to pre-enter and future organisers need to take note. My apologies to all those affected by the need to recycle maps. The organiser is happy to send new copies to anyone who went away without a map.
I'll be thinking of Alistair every time I run at Storthes Hall in the future.
