So you are thinking about joining an orienteering club! We hope that you decide to join EPOC and come to enjoy the sport as much as we do!
EPOC was formed in 1976 and held its first event at Storthes Hall, Huddersfield. It now covers Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield and has about 150 members. We belong to the Yorkshire and Humberside Orienteering Association and British Orienteering.
We organise orienteering events throughout the year: Informal (Level D) Events, which are good for people new to the sport, are held on some Saturdays in the autumn and spring and some Wednesday evenings in the summer. National (Level B) & Regional (Level C) Events that attract other orienteers from the region.
We also have a number of weekly events to suit all levels of fitness:
Monday run/walk at various locations Wednesday morning walks and runs at various locations. Friday morning mountain bike rides at various locations.
Several club members take an annual group biking and walking holidays.
All EPOC members are sent a copy of our quarterly magazine, the Epistle, with its up-to-date fixtures list and details of social events and training runs.
If you would like to try orienteering before joining EPOC, you could go to a permanent course - the EPOC ones are listed on the website. The next EPOC events are on the fixtures list - this can also be found on this site. If you are new to orienteering and would like some advice at your first events, we have EPOC helpers who can 'show you the ropes'. Just email the club secretary if you are planning to go and we can arrange for someone to meet you.
There is some other useful information on the FAQ sheet. If you want to join EPOC, please read this information and then go to the British Orienteering website http://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/page/join_online and follow the instructions.
